GPA Speaker System I Built
I?ve been listening to the GPA 416-8C?s, GPA 399A?s and Altec 902?s I built about a month ago and have changed a few things. As the drivers broke in and loosened up I found I didn?t need the 902?s as tweeters at all. The 399?s have plenty of highs as is with the Fatial LTH142 horns.
I am in the process of rebuilding a set of Heathkit W-5M amplifiers I?ve had for like 10 years and will try them with these speakers. I am also thinking of building a set of passive crossovers or buying some from GPA. Right now I am using a Rane active crossover in 2 way mode at 1000 Hz.
I put a wattmeter on the 416-8C and for moderate to fairly loud but not too loud listening it registers ? to 1/3 watt. I know this is averaged power not peak but a 6 watt amp will blow you out of the room. I also find I don?t miss a subwoofer with these either.
So far I am really happy with the sound of these. But I will keep playing around with setups and see if I can do better with them.
Thanks for the help and support, Kenny
